Turtle Bay Exploration Park recently installed a Little Free Library in the McConnell Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. The library was made possible thanks to support from the Shasta Early Literacy Program. The Little Free Library is located in the Children’s Garden, adjacent to the mosaic oasis and picnic tables. It looks like “Peanuts” cartoon character Snoopy’s doghouse, with Snoopy reading on top.
When the books were first placed in the Little Free Library, Turtle Bay staff said they were swarmed with kids and families before the books were even inside the box. In less than two weeks, the library’s stock was wiped out before Shasta Early Literacy Program, the Redding Library’s book store, and Turtle Bay staff and guests stepped up. Turtle Bay plans to add a second Little Free Library on the museum side of campus in the near future.
Guest can donate books for the Little Free Library and receive $2 off admission, as a part of Turtle Bay’s Great-Full Giving program. Turtle Bay will accept any and all books in new or gently used condition, but children’s books are specifically needed. One $2 discount per donated book per person. Books must be in new or gently used condition and turned in to the museum front desk to receive the admission discount. The discount cannot be combined with any other offer.
