  • Cottonwood Community Library Preschool Storytime: 11:30 to 12:30pm every Wednesday at the Cottonwood Community Library, 3427 Main St., Cottonwood. Includes a weekly playful story-time theme for infants to age 5, followed by an age appropriate arts and crafts projects. Admission is free. Call 347-4818
  • Story Hour at Shingletown Library: 11am to 1pm first Saturday of the month, weather permitting, at the Shingletown Library, 7074 Wilson Road, Shingletown. Features Miss Midnight the READ dog and her handler Shari Meler. For preschool to grade 6. Older children can read to Miss Midnight. Includes craft projects.
  • Weekly Storytime: 10am every Wednesday at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 1260 Churn Creek Road, Redding. Call 222-2006
  • Movie Mania: 4pm Wednesdays at the Redding Library, 1100 Parkview Ave, Redding. Family movie night in the story room. Call 245-7253.
  • Schreder Planetarium Evening Shows: Shows at 7pm year-round at Schreder Planetarium, 1644 Magnolia Ave, Redding. Tickets are $7, available up to 24 hours before show time on-site 8:30am to 4pm Mondays to Thursdays, and at www.schrederplanetarium.com.
  • Children’s Film Program: 4pm to 6pm twice per month, all at the Redding Library, 1100 Parkview Ave., Redding. Features a variety of acclaimed Children’s films. Ages 6 and older. Call 245-7250
  • Frosty Fun runs: Registration 7am, races 8am. Eight week fun walk/run series starts Jan.2. Shorty courses from 2 to 2.5 miles; long courses from 4 to 5.5 miles. Registration is $3 per race. Go to www.midniteracing.net.

  • Turtle Bay Exploration Park Children, Teen Programs: Most but not all meet at Turtle Bay Exploration Park, 844 Sundial Bridge Drive, Redding. Programs include Family Second Saturday 11am, Parrot Playhouse daily. Fish Feeding 10:30am daily, Charlie Rabbit and his Friends garden program 10:30 to 11am first Saturdays, and Little Explorers 10am on Thursdays. The park also offers youth bird walks.   • Shasta Family YMCA classes: Classes meet September to June at the YMCA, 1155 N. Court St, Redding. Topics include cooking, dancing, gymnastics and arts and crafts. Cost per month for most classes is $10 for members, $20 for non-members. Call 246-9622. Go to www.sfymca.org.
  • Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserve walks and tours: Preserve is located on Clear Creek Road in Happy Valley. It hosts a variety of birding, hiking, history, and educational events year-round. Admission is usually free. Most events meet at the HCCP parking area on Clear Creek Road, about 7 miles west of Highway 273, just west of the Clear Creek Bridge.
